German Reggae/Dancehall artist Roots Queen is making an impact with her first studio album, “Powerful Energy”  and its  début single “Feeling Free” which has spent nine weeks at number one on the Reggae chart in the UK, seven weeks at number one on another Reggae chart in the United States and was number four on New York’s top 30 Reggae Chart. While the latest single, “Fly With Me”, is currently number two in the UK and getting rotation on Reggae shows all over.

Manager Steve Stephens said about the new album. "I will never forget the night I sat in Roots Queen studio in Germany and heard the album for the first time. I just could not believe my ears and by the time we got to the last track I knew not only that Roots Queen was a special talent but that we had an album full of potential hit singles!!”

Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl feat. Kylie Auldist

Back in 2009, Freestyle released 'This Girl' by Cookin' On 3 Burners on a 45 single ahead of the full length album 'Soul Messin'.

This Girl featured renowned Aussie songstress Kylie Auldist (known for her work with The Bamboos, Polyester & Mega Bias) who joined forces with the boys and provided the focus for this mellow, beautiful and incredibly catchy song.

Shimmering horns ride over this laid back, deep soul classic, the super catchy melody found a home amongst fans of deep funk, classic 60s & Northern soul aficionados. Quickly selling out of its first, second and third vinyl pressing, the 45 went on to become one of those records that ended up going for quite 'silly money' on various rare record websites, which whilst flattering, did put the vinyl single somewhat out of reach of those not willing to part with a fat wad of cash in order to secure a copy!

So, now in 2013, Freestyle have bowed to public pressure and re-released this fantastic soul classic again on beautiful vinyl once more.

Upon its original release, everybody from Jazz FM's Peter Young through to BBC Radio 2's Mark Lamarr went just a little bit crazy about the song - and in 2013 this unforgettable  touching song is getting even more people hot under the collar all over again!

For those of you whose vinyl & turntable days are a distant memory - of course - you can also grab this classic 45 from all the usual digital outlets.

Keith Hudson - Torch Of Freedom

Whether you know him as The Dark Prince Of Reggae, the Ghetto Dentist or just plain Keith, the legendary artist and producer Keith Hudson created some of the most idiosyncratic, innovative and atmospheric reggae that ever came out of Jamaica and Hot Milk Records are proud to present the uber- rare "Torch Of Freedom" as its first ever release.

Hot Milk is a new label dedicated to re-issuing lost and hard to find roots reggae, dub and dancehall albums from the golden age of Jamaican music. Hudson was famous for his productions for reggae greats such as U Roy (Dynamic Fashion Way), Big Youth (S.90 Skank) and Dennis Alcapone (Spanish Amigo) before moving on to concentrate on his own singing. What followed was a ground breaking and completely unique body of work that was arguably never bettered by any reggae producer.

"Torch of Freedom" is one more missing piece of the Keith Hudson discography that has gained a large following and re-issues treatment in the last few years after being out of print for so long. "Torch Of Freedom" fits neatly besides Keith Hudson's other classic albums such as "Pick A Dub", "Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood" and "Playing It Cool, Playing It Right “and shows the unique sound and vision of what Hudson's work as an artist and producer was all about.

Tena Stelin - Embark On A Journey

Tena Stelin takes his name from the Amharic language of Ethiopia, which, translated, means ‘greetings’. He began his career in the late 80s as a UK-based vocalist with the Conscious Sounds label and initially enjoyed a roots hit with ‘Can’t Touch Jah’. Much of the recording for the Conscious Sounds collective’s output took place at the Manasseh studio run by sound system operator Nick Manasseh. The UK roots scene enjoys a cult following, with releases appearing on cassette corresponding with African rather than reggae recordings. In 1990 DJ Joey Jay, widely acknowledged as a pioneer of UK roots, began transmitting the sound legally with Nick Manasseh across London when the radio station Kiss FM was granted a broadcasting licence. This resulted in wider exposure for Stelin, along with other notable performers, including Devon Russell and Sound Iration. In 1989 Stelin had recorded ‘Give Thanks And Praise’ and ‘King Of Kings Parts One And Two’ with Sound Iration. Stelin’s producer, Dougie Wardrop, employed a session band known as Centry who enjoyed several hits, including ‘Stepping Time’ and ‘Thunder Mountain’. The release of début album "Wicked Invention" was received with rave reviews, though in 1990 the roots revival was still impending. Since then he has brought us the albums such as "Sun And Moon" (1992), "Take A Look At The World" (1994), "The Order" (1998) and "Unknown Legends" (2008), he is now back with "Embark On A Journey" which you can read more about at......

Mooji's "Reggae-Satsang"

The Jamaican born spiritual guide in the Hindu-tradition of Advaita, Mooji has once again teamed up with Jonahgold of Goldheart Music to bring us another 13-track album full of meditive vibes “Reggae-Satsang”.
As with his previous release “Dub- Satsang”, from late 2011, his soothing spoken words are laid over music by Jonahgold, which this time has been especially composed around them, rather than riding on riddims from his back catalogue and according to the artist/producer makes it “more reggae than straight dub”.
The message is again a spiritual one about finding inner peace and can be downloaded free or streamed from Soundcloud.

Please visit www.mooji.org

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

* Satsang (Sanskrit sat = true, sanga = company) is in Indian philosophy that involves (1) the company of the "highest truth," (2) the company of a guru, or (3) company with an assembly of persons who listen to, talk about, and assimilate the truth.[1] This typically involves listening to or reading scriptures, reflecting on, discussing and assimilating their meaning, meditating on the source of these words, and bringing their meaning into one’s daily life.

Sleepy Time Ghost - Youthman Riddim [Unit 137]

As we head in to 2013 Unit 137 are proud to present this full length release from  Sleepy Time Ghost. Having appeared on remix duty on each Unit 137 release to date they thought it was time Sleepy made his début with this assured roots riddim alongside the notorious Ras Demo [A.K.A Demolition Man] and Lionpulse, an up and coming sound-system from Bristol.

Alongside the outstanding original is a Dub from Joe Ariwa, head honcho at the foundational Ariwa Studio, alongside his father, Mad Professor. Hylu & Jago also return with a driving Steppas remix, bringing a new energy to Lionpulse’s vocal version. The release will be available on heavyweight 12” vinyl & digital this month.

Rod Taylor - ‘Sing Praises’

‘Sing Praises’ is Reggae Roast’s 1st outing in 2013, building on a positive year for the label with sell-out events, fresh new releases and recent additions to their team. They've drawn for a classic slice of Roots Rockers Reggae courtesy of foundation artist Rod Taylor with Adam Prescott & Manasseh at controls in addition to a foray into the future with Alpha Steppa & Vibration Lab.

‘Sing Praises’ promotes a conscious message throughout this four-track release and evokes an optimistic stance on Rasta ideology. Rod Taylor steps out with his timeless style reminiscent of his early Channel One output that is reinforced by Adam Prescott &  Nick Manasseh to create a truly meditative sound.

Together with the likes of Barry Brown, Sugar Minott and Barrington Levy, Rod Taylor was one of the first generation of Jamaican singers to make their reputation on Soundsystem. His inimitable style led him to work with some of the most revered producers in the Reggae scene (Ossie Hibbert, Prince Far I   Mikey Dread to name but a few) thus creating a worldwide following for his works. Currently residing in France, Rod is still very much at the top of his game as this release proves in addition to a constant demand to spread his Rootical messages on the top European Soundsystems.

The new recruit is Nottingham's own Adam Prescott, an up and coming producer combining a crucial selection of rough and tough Roots music with a modern injection of Dubstep. With support and guidance from Mark Iration (from the Leeds based Iration Steppas) Adam has been making moves in the world of Dub & Dubstep for a number of years working on original tunes with well known and established artists alongside remixing for some of the top sounds in the scene.

Nick Manasseh has been behind hit after hit throughout his extensive career at the forefront of Roots music. From the late 80’s with his 1st outfit, Sound Iration, and his KISS FM days right through to his recent string of Reggae Roast & Roots Garden riddims, Nick continues to innovate and never imitate as he brings out a contemplative and mystical Dub that only he can.

With two additional Dubwise excursions included, from Vibration Lab & Alpha Steppa, this release caters for the full length of the Reggae spectrum. Alpha Steppa (2nd generation from the distinguished Alpha & Omega outfit) serves up a re-imagining of the original vocal from Rod to showcase his distinctive ‘Steppas’ style. Vibration Lab step up to the plate with their ‘Future Reggae’ sound supplying a forward thinking remix that reinforces the original message.

This is the 1st of many exciting contemporary releases lined up for 2013 including Conscious Sounds (Bush Chemists), Ramon Judah, Vibration Lab, Dubmatix, Hollie Cook, Rebel MC & Adam Prescott as well as continued sell out shows both in the UK & Europe.

The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club

Charles, has been a dedicated soul boy from a tender age. In fact, he was raised on the sounds of sweet soul:
"My father came over from Guyana in the West Indies and he brought a load of records over with him. There was always Ray Charles playing in the house, The Platters, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. My Dad would play all this old stuff. In fact I was very close to getting called Otis when I was born! One of my earliest memories is my mum and dad dancing around the kitchen to Ray Charles' I've Got A Woman. I remember the look of sheer joy and exhilaration on their faces. I was hooked!"
After achieving mainstream success with his poetry, and then acting and TV presenting roles in cult sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, Robot Wars and TV's longest running soap opera Coronation Street - as the taxi driving, soul music fanatic Lloyd Mullaney - Craig's reputation as a fun, funk loving soul boy was cemented with the public. In 2001, as the BBC prepared to launch the new digital radio station BBC 6 Music, he was asked to present a show. Over ten years on from the début broadcast, the show is now the award winning station's longest running, and has the biggest share of audience too, a very impressive result for what was originally thought of as a 'niche' programme!
It wasn't long before promoters of club nights and festivals were asking for Craig to bring his 'Trunk Of Funk' out on the road, and countless DJ slots across the UK and into Europe included; Mostly Jazz Festival, The Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Kendal Calling and The Big Chill, Vintage at Goodwood and even the world renowned Glastonbury Festival. It was only natural that Craig and Freestyle Records would join forces to bring forth this album album - the closest thing there is to having Craig come round your house and start the party off! Asked to sum up his feelings about his first DJ compilation album and the vibrant global music scene it reflects Craig said:
"This CD contains 19 rip snorting, bass drum banging, brass blaring booga-bloody-loo, big beats, bass lines and blooming brilliant vocals. From as far away as Australia with The Bamboo's ultimate party starter Amen Brother, to The Excitements coming out of Barcelona and some cover versions that have surely got to be better than the real thing, like Nostalgia 77 & Alice Russell'stake on The White Stripes '7 Nation Army'. And T Bird and the Breaks 'The Clap Hands Song', not to mention The Incredible Bongo Bands' skin shredding version of The Rolling Stones 'Satisfaction'. Bands like Smoove & Turrell from the north-east and The Haggis Horns. All these tunes are guaranteed to tear the roof off any venue festival or house party in the known universe.....

Ripple - Sure Is Funky

Ripple were an interracial Michigan soul-funk band who are best know for their 1973 hit 'I Don't Know What It Is but It Sure Is Funky' which peaked in the US Pop charts at #67 and the US R&B chart at #11. It has also proved popular as a break beat among the hip hop fraternity being sampled by the likes of  Special Ed on ‘I Got It Made’, Kid ‘N’ Play’s‘Rollin’ With' and on a remixed version of ‘Everything’ by Mary J. Blige in 1997.
They were something of an eclectic bunch with an array of influences that left their debut self titled album sounding more like a hastily put together compilation as it drifts from kick ass funk through soulful leanings, akin to a less distinctive variant of Stevie Wonder to pop inclined tones, which all in all left them neither too raw nor too slick. Maybe they would have been better to stick with funk as the other popular song from this set ‘Funky Song’, another heavily sampled classic (Ice Cube’s 'The Death', MCLyte’s 'Funky Song' and many more), proves for when they are in this vein they really create a groove to make ya move with a vibe that does exactly what it says on the tin.

1   You Were Right On Time
2   Be My Friend
3   I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky
4   I’ll Be Right There Trying
5   Get Off
6   See The Light In The Window
7   A Funky Song
8   Willie, Pass The Water
9    Dance, Lady Dance

Martha High - Soul Overdue

Martha High's impeccable soul credentials are beyond question. She was a member of  The Jewels, who in the mid 60s were part of The James Brown Revue, and also released two 45s produced by James Brown. Although The Jewels eventually disbanded, Martha continued to be a part of the live James Brown show for the next 30 years! It's Martha's voice that graces JB classics such as 'Say It Loud - I'm Black & I'm Proud' & 'The Big Payback' amongst many others.
Soul Overdue is an incredibly apt title for a project that has been over 40 years in the making, and it shows that Martha's voice remains undiminished, her youthful vocal clarity and style quite simply dazzles, as she shows a host of young pretenders the way it should be done!
Kicking off with a high octane rendition of ‘No More Heartaches’, Martha and Speedometer prove to be a perfect match as the bands super tight musicianship provides a formidable backdrop to her searing, soaring vocals. In comparison, the more subtle, tender moments on this album, in particular the heart wrenching version of Etta James' 'I'd Rather Go Blind' had already been proven as a show stopper live, and now that it has been committed to tape, with The Voxettes added backing vocals, and Andy Fairclough's masterful organ playing, it must surely be one of the finest examples of contemporary bluesy soul around.
The entire album has garnered masses of love & support and seems destined to be one of the most exciting & vital new soul releases for many years.

Reviews:
"An album that captures one of soul music’s most powerful voices. 4 Stars!"  Mojo magazine

"A beautifully measured album full of vim and vigour" Blues & Soul magazine

"Martha was good enough for ‘The Godfather’ – she’s good enough for me. Funky heaven!"  Peter Young, Jazz FM

Tracklists:
A Mungo's Hi Fi Ft Afrikan Simba & Dixie Peach - Leave The Oil Alone
B Mungo's Hi Fi Ft Charlie P - Skidip It Up Dub

This is a rare combination track from two legends of the UK roots scene, offering a deep meditation on the madness of the global oil industry and the specific evils it is perpetrating in Simba's home country, Nigeria. The flip side features an exclusive dub of Charlie P's ‘Skidip’ on the same riddim.

The Toasters – Pool Shark

The Toasters were one of the first American bands in the so called third wave of ska and did much to popularize the genre on the underground scene there in the mid- to late '80s. Their sound is very much inspired by that of the sounds of 2-Tone but without the punky, new wave overtones and so it veers more to a traditional ska and rocksteady feel, but as you’d expect from a band that hails from the eclectic city of New York there are other subtle influences that crop up throughout their music.
