Other highlights throughout the 4 days include; two exclusive comeback shows from Pama International (their first London show in 2 years) and 100 Men starring Mik Whitnall from Babyshambles (their first in 2 decades) and an International Ska Revue at The Garage in Islington on Good Friday 29 March 2013 with 7 acts; the superb indie, ska, pop of Razika from Norway, who have just gone in their national album charts at number 4, Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra from Hungary, Mr. T Bone & the Young Lions from Italy, Bombskare from Scotland and fresh from supports with Madness London's brightest new hopes Buster Shuffle headline.

In addition to the Studio One Thames Cruise, the festival also launches several other new events including the inaugural year of The UK Sound System Conference all-nighter as a tribute to the late great Duke Vin.  Vin aka The Tickler was the first Jamaican sound system to operator in England having stowed away on a ship from Jamaica in the 1950's!  The night boasts an awesome line-up of legendary selectors representing some of the UK's greatest Sounds; Metro with Eddie Regal (Metro Downbeat), Gladdy Wax (Gladdy Wax Sound System), Ras Digby (Sir Jessus Sound System), Jumbo (Java Hi-Power) plus the Tighten Up Crew and in room two Mungos Hi Fi & Wrongtom.

Easter Sunday see's all roads lead to Camden Town, an area steeped in Ska, Reggae and 2 Tone history, with two daytime events; Do The Dog zine, the world's longest running ska publication now into it's 24th year, host their label special at Madness' old stomping ground Camden's Dublin Castle, whilst Dingwalls on Camden Lock host the festivals 'Sunday Social' - a free event featuring a record fair, book signings, boss DJs and exhibitions. The whole festival wraps up after Ken Boothe's performance with the 2 Tone Disco starring Rhoda Dakar from The Bodysnatchers and Special AKA.

From its birth in Jamaica, Ska has come a long way - morphing and inspiring every generation and reaching all corners of the world. The festival showcases all Ska has to offer from its roots in rhythm and blues, mento and calypso, to the Jamaican originators, the progression through rocksteady and reggae, 2 Tone, ska-punk and right up-to-date with 21st century sounds.  Originally launched in 1988, The London International Ska Festival proudly celebrates its 25th anniversary and the wonderful world of Ska in all its irrepressible guises.

PAMA INTL REISSUES - First 2 albums available again
Pama Intl's first two albums are now available again after being deleted for years, compete with a bunch of bonus tracks, first up is

Pama International - Pama International (RRHIT10CD)

Pama Intl's self-titled debut CD was originally released back in 2002. The collective immediately set out their soul-induced ska, rocksteady and reggae stall. Featuring an all-star cast with members from Steel Pulse, Galliano, Pop Will Eat Itself, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Style Council, Big Boss Man and UK skasters The Loafers, Special Beat, Intensified and Ska Cubano, it has become something of a cult album in the UK and beyond. The album is crammed full of eclectic sounds. Old school meets new in this soundclash of 60’s ska, northern soul, lovers rock, rocksteady, and even a Sly & The Family Stone classic. The CD comes with 5 bonus versions, taken from the now deleted Pama Intl-Dub Store Special ep, which was mixed by Groove Corporation. These tracks also feature Lynval Golding (The Specials) and Lee Thompson (Madness).

Pama International - Too Many Freaks Not Enough Stages (RRHIT11CD)

After much critical acclaim for their first album Pama International returned with their second album “Too Many Freaks Not Enough Stages” in 2004. Produced by Fuzz Townsend, (insatible solo artist and drummer with Bentley Rhythm Ace and Pop Will Eat Itself), who also picked up drumming duties on the album. It's a much sparser affair, with some beautiful song writing. Again fronted by long time musical cohorts Sean Flowerdew and Finny,
The Too Many Freaks reissue comes complete with 3 previously unreleased demo versions and 'All About You' G Corp version (taken from the now deleted 'Dub Store Special' ep)

Both of these will be available in HMV and all good record shops. You can order them now direct

PAMA INTERNATIONAL - I STILL LOVE YOU MORE (BONGOLIAN VERSION) & 7" VINYL

Also out in the next couple of weeks... The third (and last) in the series of Pama Intl's limited edition 7"s from 'Outernational' is set to be a version affair. Mirroring the second 7" (which featured I Still Love You More b/w Equality & Justice For All) the next 7" is set to be the killer soul version of 'I Still Love You More' (Bongolian version) and a dub of Equality and Justice for All. The first 2 singles were red and yellow vinyl, this on will be on green vinyl completing the set. Again it will be hand numbered/300 copies only. Be sure to pre-order your copy now if you want one. Pama International - Outernational Album Review

After the flurry of album releases from Rockers Revolt last year, that saw them gain a reputation for varied and quality releases from both new and established artists, things have been very quiet on that front this year. At last, however, they bring you the new album from Pama International….Outernational….and boy it’s a belter!

Despite this seemingly quiet phase at the Rockers / Pama HQ, nothing could have been further from the truth, as Pama have been touring extensively, with the highlight being a support slot on The Specials 30th anniversary tour earlier this year. They've also made many various festivals appearances. In-between all these shows though rather than taking it easy and sitting back on their laurels, after the acclaimed success of last years ‘Love Filled Dub Band’, and anti gun crime ‘Highrise Campaign’, they have been working hard to produce a follow up and create something that is at least as good if not better.
There is an evident influence of the Specials here as Lynval Golding prominently features again, even taking lead vocal duties on ‘Question The Answer’, plus his old sparring partner Sir Horace Gentleman supplies bass on this as well as ‘Dub A Disco’, after having released his own limited edition 7” earlier in the year with the label. Production duties are as they were with LFDB, a joint venture between Pama's Sean Flowerdew with the help of John Collins (producer of the classic Ghost Town), with Collins's touch likely adding to some of the tunes kind of lost Specials feel. This however is certainly no band trying to mimic them. Indeed with the host of many and varied musicians that have appeared on their releases over the years they have somehow still managed to cultivate their own distinct, rich and strong sound that crosses bass laden, dub fuelled reggae with late 60’s funky, soul sounding groovers, best displayed in the bubbly, brass filled and infectious single ‘Happenstance’, followed here nicely by it’s dub ‘Dub A Dance’. As you come to expect from the band now the lyrics of the songs range between biting looks at inner city and everyday social problems and sweet love laments.
Among the highlights are ‘Quality & Justice For All’ which gets the ball rolling nicely, with it’s driving beat, glimpses of echoic horns, and a polished vocal cry from Finny. ‘Are We Saved Yet?’ starts of with a gospel flavoured keyboard and shaking tambourine, before bursting in to a funky, soulful, strut with Finny this time going from the sweet vocal of the opener into a more gruff vocal growl, to give the tune just that hint of stax appeal, while ‘Still I Wait’ contains a blissed out dubby riddim under the mournful sounding lyric.
As said before a quite year from Rockers Revolt for releases, but this has definitely been worth the wait, and will without doubt please fans, but should also hopefully start to see them gain due recognition and plaudits from further a field.

Pama International - Outernational

THE NEW PAMA LP..... OUTERNATIONAL IS IN THE BAG!!
The new album Pama Outernational has been mastered at John Dents Loud Mastering (the man behind the mastering of Island Rcds classic such as Bob Marley, Lee Perry and one of our all time favourite cuts Junoir Murvin's Police & Thieves.) The 12 track album, billed as "the heavyweight dub sounds of now" runs like this...

1.Equality & Justice For All
2.Dub A Disco
3.Are We Saved Yet?
4.I Still Love You More
5.Still I Wait
6.He's More Like His Father
7.Happenstance
8.Dub A Dance
9.Question The Answer
10.Trade It All For More
11.What You Do Now
12.Look Out Your Window

As the billing would suggest the mainstay of the albums direction is heavyweight dub sounds, but with Stax, Johnny Cash, Ken Parker, The Blockheads, Joe Gibbs & Peter Tosh also inspiring, you can expect a fairly mixed bag. Lynval Golding sings backing vocals throughout and takes lead on 'Question The Answer', whilst fellow member from The Specials, Sir Horace Panter takes bass duties on 'Dub A Disco' and also 'Question The Answer'.
After the success of last years 'Love Filled Dub Band' and having heard the great new single 'Happenstance', I for one am certainly looking forward to it's release!!

Pama International - Highrise Album Review

Well I have to admit I was rather dreading having to review this LP as I'm not a big fan of "riddim" albums as apart from changing the vocalist it all well....sounds the same. So as luck would have it when I got to hear this it was nice to find out it is in fact a two riddim LP! Ok enough of the silliness and down to business after all this LP is released in aid of a good cause, and what you want to know is if I part with my money will I get something good back, and not just a load of old rubbish that has been hastily put together. Well rest at ease my good friends this is worth every penny.
First off I love the way this whole package has been put together and it is obvious that it is something that all involved have thought carefully about, from the (if you get the CD) cardboard vinyl style LP cover, with inlay sleeve and the track listing as an A and B side. For that is basically how it runs. The 'Highrise' riddim is the A side and each track runs into the next so it feels almost like an extended mix. It starts off with Pama's own Love Dub Band LP version, before seamlessly moving into Dennis Alcapone's DJ style version, and then morphs into Billy Bragg! Now how many times have you seen Dennis followed by Billy? One thing is for sure though no one can put everyday observations into a song better than Mr Bragg, and the line "Just because the system has failed you don't fail yourself" kind of says it all for me as there is no excuse for taking what you may perceive as a dead end situation and using it as an excuse to wastefully take another persons life.
After the first four (the other being a nice little Wrongtom dub) versions of Highrise and just as you're starting to feel you've heard enough along come Mungo's Hi Fi to turn the riddim into something completely different as the riddim becomes a deep, dark, urban sounding bass heavy dubstep, to round things off nicely.
The next riddim, or B side if you prefer, is 'No More Guns', which is my favourite of the two and has a more up beat tempo and funky reggae vibe and is going to be a showstopper live. Finny's sweet soprano vocals are off set by Dennis Alcapone's ruff and tuff chat on the riddim title track, followed by a G.Corp dub version with the beautiful sound of the Melodica drifting over the top. Then there its 'Do They Ever Wonder', same riddim just a name change, which features the vocal talents of rising Southeast London talent Jimmy Screech as he showcases his reggae-rap style (Oh keep a look out for his The Remedy LP which is due for release later this year).
I think this is great little LP with enough variation on both riddims to stop you from getting bored, so dig into your pockets not only to help give money to a worthy cause, but also to get yourself a bit of fine listening pleasure.

PAMA INTL - HIGHRISE CAMPAIGN (RRHITCD8) What's It All About?

What's it all about I hear you ask? Well...The Highrise Campaign, is an anti-knife & gun initiative, featuring versions of Pama Intl's anthem 'Highrise' by; Studio One veteran Dennis Alcapone, Michie One, Wrongtom (best known for his work with Hard Fi and recent Roots Manuva album), Billy Bragg, G.Corp, Mungos Hi Fi, Lynval Golding (The Specials) and Banana Clan protege Jimmy Screech. The album will be in all good record shops on 2nd February'09 on Pama Intl's own Rockers Revolt label, with proceeds going to a number of UK children's charities including; Kids Company, London, Southmede Centre, Bristol and Basement Studios, Bristol.
It is very plain for everyone to see that knife and gun crime is out of control in the UK. Everyone involved with the making of Highrise, is truly passionate about spreading a positive message, as well as providing mentoring, funding and opportunities to the younger generations. Members have been directly affected by knife and gun crime; Dennis Alcapone's stepson was shot dead in Limehouse, London this summer and Lynval Golding (The Specials/Pama Intl) almost lost his life in a very well documented knife attack.

Their aims are simple. We need to make our streets safer, better places. We need to understand why this is happening. We need to stop it and we need to rebuild our sense of community for everyone. No one excluded, no one neglected. We need to create brighter futures for all our children. All the charity's chosen by Pama Intl in this campaign do amazing work, actively give youths opportunities, support and guidance on a daily basis. In addition to the album's release, Pama Intl will be taking this vital message on the road. They will perform a series of club shows, as well as matinee performances and workshops for under 18s throughout 2009. Please support this project by buying the release, coming to the launch party, checking out the charities.

Kid Company http://kidsco.org.uk/
Bassment Studios http://www.basementstudio.co.uk/

Besides being a great tune, this is also a very worthy cause and I'm sure that most people in the UK have unfortunately come across this growing problem themselves or through people they know, and we here at Springline whole heartedly support this cause.
