News From Do The Dog

Just dropped through on to my mat is the September edition of the ‘Do The Dog’ skazine.
Amongst all the top news is a few pieces I’ve posted here, but if you want to find out more you can subscribe for just £5 for 4 issues (released roughly every quarter). Robb Blake – One Man Ska Explosion

If you're an old 2 Tone fan and you want something new to listen to in that kind of vein then you won't go far wrong with Ex-Whitmore, frontman Robb Blake's second solo album which contains a selection of stripped down, catchy 2 tone inspired ska & reggae. The whole LP is nicely paced and you'll soon find yourself singing-a-long along with the catchy choruses and drink fuelled lyrics. The LP should appeal to a broad section of people with its easy going feel and Robb's melodic vocals that now and then drift towards a more Joe Cocker style growl. Pick of the tracks for me are," Pick Yourself Up", with its rocksteady, feel interspersed with ska breaks. "It's Never Over" and blistering opening track "Trafficlight", the opening lines 'head like a traffic light, burning red, machinegun mouth..' a great way to describe your girlfriend going off on one at you.....been there and got the badge!
There are some more mellow moments that stand out like "Friends Of Mine" with its more pop feel and rocky guitar riff plus the acoustic "Waiting For The Rain" a song about drinking to forget....a theme which along with women trouble appears to be prominent throughout the album.
So all in all a good LP, which will sit nicely within anyone's collection, also really liked the cover, that pays a fine homage to the “Trojan Explosion” classic sleeve design of old.

Dirty Revolution - It's Gonna Get Dirty

"It's Gonna Get Dirty" is a new 5 track EP from female-fronted SKA-DIFF 4 piece Dirty Revolution, and is released on Do the Dog Records.
Their music is a mix of punk, roots reggae and ska; all blended together in the style of The Clash and The Specials. Opening track "Dirty Revolution" shows this off as it veers from high octane ska to slow dubby beats, while "Failure to Communicate" with, Stu White taking over lead vocals, with its anti-establishment lyrics, and touches of melodica, is Punk inspired Reggae with bite.
There are lighter tunes on here with the bright and breezy "50p", taking a quite comical look at the 'style over content' world of pop and a lot of today's rap, with female vocalist Reb Sutton declaring that her mum is harder than 50 Cent's mum, and her bum's bigger than Britney's!, And the jaunty "I Love Reggae".
This EP ends all too quickly with "Police". A tune that I can well relate to, about the police not being there when you need them for something important, but dropping on you like a ton of bricks when you commit some minor misdemeanour!
I look forward to hearing more from this promising band. However, if you want to hear what I'm talking about, and try before you buy, pop onto their myspace page, where you can hear all the tracks for yourself, plus the cracking East & West, which does not appear on the EP.

TOP CATS - Mr Donkey Paradise

Here is another review of what I consider a classic LP that everyone should have in their collection.
TOP CATS were a group eight talented musicians, who released their first, and as far as I know only album in 1999, the exceptional, self produced “MR DONKEY PARADISE” on the Jamdown label. Natty the lead singer (no not the new so called reggae-pop sensation) can apparently now be found DJ'ing down at Gaz's Rockin' Blues, every Thursday night in Soho and also singing for Ska Cubano. I for one though feel it is about time for the return of Top Cats!
The album is a collection of nine excellent 60s feeling full on pure Jamaican Ska tunes, with plenty of horns and cool sounding double bass. The album kicks off with the ska swing of “Calling Your Name” and continues at a fair old pace through the skanktastic “Tear the Place Down” and the stomping “Lay Down the Law”, before finally bringing things down to a simmer with the instrumental "Blue Lagoon". This is just a brief rest bite however, before the heat is turned full on again with another mainly instrumental tune “The Chalice of Fu Manchu”, and the humours "Dr Cash", before everything comes to what feels like a premature end with the storming "Let Them Go".
This is without a doubt one of, if not the best trad Ska album's of recent times, and I dare anyone to listen to it without wanting to dance. So tear the place down and let go!

MORE KEBAB NEWS...

Having only just posted about the Kebabs, I have now just been informed of the following......

There have been big changes in the Kebab camp, firstly they now have 2 new brassplayers, 'Doc Fox' on Bone and 'Summers' on Trumpet. If you go along to see them in Manchester or Barnsley in the following month you might catch Doctor Fingers tinkling the Keys or even Darrol from ZenBaseballbat playing 2nd trombone!

Also they are apparently up for the Orange/T4 comp. So to get them on the telly.
They ask can you register now at http://orangeunsignedact.co.uk/acts/catchitkebabs , voting hasn't started yet, but if you do register you will be informed of when voting starts. Then you can vote once a day for a month to put them on the box!!

Back on April 5th they attempted a record called 'Tour in a Day'. Well, they are going to release the official video, venue by venue on YouTube, this will be cut up as weekly episodes, and can be found on Kebab TV.

Catch It Kebabs

Although not a Reggae band in the pure sense, I thought this lot still deserved a mention on these pages especially if you like a ska beat with a bit of a beefy kick to it.
The Catch it Kebabs are a 9-Piece band from Barnsley in South Yorkshire who are putting a modern twist to ska; incorporating swing grooves and a punk ideology taking influence from a wide range of bands from ‘The Clash’ to ‘Glen Miller’ and all that lies in-between, a sound which they have affectionately termed, ‘swing-core ska/punk’.
Over the past 4 years since their formation, the band has built up a reputation for being one of the hardest working acts on the UK ska scene, and having caught them on a couple of occasions myself and I can agree with the quote that they have been "entrancing the audience with their frantic stage show and sassy live swagger". I would highly recommend catching one of their shows! They have reportedly been doing around 100 gigs a year, so I don't want to hear excuses for not going along to see them, and the band has built up a strong and loyal fan base from all over the UK and Europe on the strength of this.
Catch-it Kebabs have 2 albums already available: ‘Skankin’ Sausages (Do the Dog/Feet First, 2004, I have a copy of this and its great!) and ‘Return of the Kebabulance’ (Riot/Feet First, 2006). Although both albums received rave reviews, it was the maturity of ROTK which turned heads in the media. Brandon Allin from the biggest US online punk-zine, ‘Absolute Punk’ wrote: “A strong and distinct, and equally a wonderful release”.
Recently the band had a track from their latest CD used on an international ska compilation, Ska is Dead. Their track, ‘Bluelight’, features alongside some of the worlds biggest ska acts, including ‘The Planet Smashers’, ‘Voodoo Glowskulls’ and ‘The Toasters’.
The future is looking rosy, with their 3rd album 'Broken Vans and Masterplans' currently in the demo stages. Jamie from the band tells me that so far they have 4 finished tracks and the rest promise to be very ska and reggae. The four tunes completed so far are: A reggae-dub track called 'Hope in the Union'.A ska-northern soul hybrid called 'Can't stop'.A fast paced full-on ska track called 'Sirens'.A sleazy swing number called 'Maggie'
Also if you visit their web site now you can download the track playing on the flashplayer for free! I personally think its great tune, and is far too good to be given away....so get it while you can.
